Mechanical crawl space ventilation

If you are bothered by a musty smell or stench in your home, it may be that your crawl space is too humid. In many cases, this can be solved with crawl space ventilation. If regular crawl space ventilation is not possible, mechanical crawl space ventilation may be the solution.

Why ventilate a crawl space?

Rising damp from the groundwater can cause your crawl space to become too wet. If this is the case, you may experience a musty smell, stench, mould or even foundation rot. In many cases, this can be solved by installing crawl space ventilation. Normally, we drill into the crawl space at the front and back of the house. In this way, the pressure difference of the wind can ensure airflow through the crawl space. In this way, we let nature do the work for us. The video next to this text nicely illustrates how we work when we install crawl space ventilation. In some cases, it is not possible to drill on both sides of the house. In those cases, mechanical crawl space ventilation can offer a solution.

Why mechanical crawl space ventilation?

Why mechanical crawl space ventilation?

For regular crawl space ventilation, it is important that holes can be drilled through the facade to the crawl space at the front and back of the house. However, this is often not possible when an extension has been built without a crawl space underneath. In that case, no effective natural air flow can be created. In these cases, an air flow can still be forced with mechanical crawl space ventilation. This can remove the moist air from the crawl space. However, if it is possible to drill on both sides, we still recommend installing regular crawl space ventilation.

What is required for mechanical crawl space ventilation?

When installing mechanical crawl space ventilation, it is important that the crawl space is accessible. If you do not have a crawl hatch, we can make one for you. In addition, there must be enough space on the facade to drill a hole through. This hole will be the outlet for the mechanical crawl space ventilation. We connect the mechanical crawl space ventilation to the power in the meter cupboard, or a socket in the crawl space itself. In this case, the mechanical crawl space ventilation sucks in the crawl space and discharges moist air via the facade. The hole in the facade is neatly finished with a grille.

The solution to odors from your crawl space

It is often seen as an option not to ventilate the crawl space, but to seal the floors watertight and airtight. That may seem like a good option, but in practice odours from the crawl space often come up through the walls, for example. Good ventilation of the crawl space prevents this. In addition, the risk of concrete rot remains if there is no or insufficient crawl space ventilation. Even if the crawl space itself is well insulated, it is advisable to install ventilation. There is still a chance of condensing moisture that has nowhere to go and therefore causes odours and rot.

Why regular crawl space ventilation instead of mechanical crawl space ventilation?

Why regular crawl space ventilation instead of mechanical crawl space ventilation?

Mechanical crawl space does entail slightly higher costs compared to “regular” crawl space ventilation. The installation is somewhat higher in price because more material costs and expertise are involved than with “regular” crawl space ventilation. In addition, mechanical crawl space ventilation also consumes a little energy, while regular crawl space ventilation is completely controlled by nature.

How much does mechanical crawl space ventilation cost?

The costs for installing mechanical crawl space ventilation are somewhat higher than the costs for regular crawl space ventilation. In most cases, we can install mechanical crawl space ventilation for €950,- excluding VAT. In addition, the fan still consumes a little power. The minimum consumption of this is 5 Watt.

How much does mechanical crawl space ventilation cost?

Can I also turn off the mechanical crawl space ventilation?

The mechanical crawl space ventilation is normally supplied with a humidity sensor, but also with a remote control.
Here you have the choice to let the fan regulate itself, or to take control of how much air it moves.

Can the mechanical crawl space ventilation withstand frost and freezing temperatures?

We have specially selected mechanical crawl space ventilation that is resistant to freezing cold. Even if the temperature drops below freezing, the fan will continue to work and will not break down. This gives you a solution that is also resistant to the elements in extreme weather.

FAQ

Do I need mechanical crawl space ventilation?

If you do not have a facade at the front and back of the house to drill into, mechanical crawl space ventilation may be the solution. Instead of natural ventilation, you can force ventilation. This will still allow you to create a healthy climate in the crawl space.

What is the difference between crawl space ventilation and mechanical crawl space ventilation?

Regular crawl space ventilation can be installed by drilling at the front and back of the house, this can create a draft in the crawl space. Sometimes you can't drill on enough sides to create this draft. Then you can use mechanical crawl space.

How much does mechanical crawl space ventilation cost?

Normally, installing mechanical crawl space ventilation costs approximately €950 excluding VAT. Depending on your situation, this amount may be higher or lower.

How long does it take to install mechanical crawl space ventilation?

Installing mechanical crawl space insulation typically takes about 4 to 6 hours.

Can mechanical crawl space ventilation also be installed in my home?

In most cases, installing mechanical crawl space ventilation is possible. We are happy to think along with you, so if in doubt, please contact us!
