Various plugs and anchors distributed on a concrete surface with cut plasterboard and professional tools

Which plug do you use in a hollow wall?

Attaching objects to hollow walls can be a challenge, especially if you do not use the right plug. Unlike solid walls, hollow walls, such as drywall and parquet walls, do not have a solid base directly behind the surface. This means that standard plugs often fail or even fall through the wall.

Choosing the right hollow wall plug is crucial for a secure and durable attachment. Whether you want to hang a mirror, a television, or a heavy painting, with the right knowledge and materials, you can firmly attach any object to a hollow wall without the risk of damage or safety hazards.

What is a hollow wall and why do you need special plugs?

A hollow wall is a wall construction in which an empty space exists between the outer layer and the supporting structure behind it. This type of wall usually consists of plasterboard or system walls mounted on a metal or wooden frame.

Special plugs are necessary because ordinary plugs cannot expand in the hollow space behind the wall. In a solid wall, a plug expands against the material surrounding the drill hole, but in a hollow wall, it simply falls through the hole. Hollow wall plugs are therefore designed to anchor themselves behind the wall or to distribute the load over a larger surface area of the wall panel.

The weight you want to hang determines which type of hollow wall plug you need. Light objects up to 5 kilograms can often be hung with simple plugs, while heavier objects require specialized fixings that distribute the weight properly.

What types of plugs are there for hollow walls?

Various types of hollow wall plugs are available, each suitable for specific situations and weights. The most common types are hammer-in plugs, molly bolts, and screw anchors.

Folding plugs are ideal for light to medium-heavy fixings. These plugs have wings that fold out behind the wall when you tighten the screw. They are suitable for weights of up to approximately 15 kilograms per plug and work well in plasterboard 9 to 15 millimeters thick.

Molly bolts offer greater load-bearing capacity and are suitable for heavier objects. The metal anchor unfolds behind the wall and pulls against the back when you tighten the bolt. They can support weights of up to 25 kilograms each, depending on the wall thickness and the type of drywall.

For very heavy fastenings, there are special screw anchors and hollow wall anchors that drill and anchor themselves into the wall through their own rotating movement. These are suitable for weights of 30 kilograms or more per fastening point.

How do you choose the right plug for your hollow wall?

The choice of the correct hollow wall plug depends on three main factors: the weight of the object, the thickness of the wall panel, and the available space behind the wall. First, measure the wall thickness with an awl or a thin drill bit.

For wall thicknesses of 9 to 12 millimeters, folding plugs are usually the best choice for light to medium-weight objects. For thicker walls of 15 to 25 millimeters, it is better to use molly bolts, especially for heavier fastenings. Always check that there is sufficient space behind the wall for the plug to unfold.

Also pay attention to the material of the wallboard. Gypsum boards can have different densities, and aerated concrete sometimes requires different fastening methods. If in doubt about the load-bearing capacity or the correct type of fastening, it is wise to professional drilling to consider, especially for valuable or heavy objects.

How do you correctly install a hollow wall plug?

Correctly installing a hollow wall plug begins with drilling a hole of the correct diameter. Use a sharp drill bit and drill slowly to prevent tearing the drywall. The hole diameter must exactly match the plug's specifications.

Carefully insert the plug into the hole until the collar rests against the wall. For hinged plugs, then tighten the screw until you feel the wings unfold behind the wall. Stop turning as soon as the plug is firmly in place to prevent damage to the wall.

With molly bolts, tighten the bolt until the metal anchor is fully extended behind the wall. You will notice this because the resistance suddenly increases. Then remove the screw, attach your object, and tighten the screw again, through the object, into the plug.

Always test the strength of the fastening before hanging the full weight on it. A properly installed hollow wall plug should not move or creak under normal load.

When do you need professional concrete drills for wall mounting?

Professional drilling becomes necessary when you want to attach heavy objects to hollow walls or when standard hollow wall plugs do not offer sufficient load-bearing capacity. This applies especially to televisions larger than 40 inches, heavy cabinets, or industrial mountings.

Professional advice is also valuable if there is any doubt about the wall's construction. Some hollow walls contain hidden pipes or structural elements that could be damaged during drilling. An experienced specialist can assess the wall structure and determine the safest fastening method.

In situations where fastening is crucial for safety, such as with heavy mirrors above sinks or wall cabinets in kitchens, professional installation is a wise investment. The cost of professional work often outweighs the potential damage if the fastening fails.
